Chapter 10

Hudson calls Brynn from outside her apartment. When she opens the door, she looks like she’s near tears. “Hey, it’s okay, I’m here,” Hudson reassures her. Without thinking, he wraps her up in his arms. He could stay like this forever.

“Thanks for coming, really,” says Brynn. “I’m probably just being paranoid but I don’t know...there was a weird guy today.”

“A weird guy?” Hudson doesn’t like the sound of that.

“Just someone at The Sand Dune,” says Brynn. Now it’s Hudson’s turn to be paranoid. All he can think about is the news about the San Diego clan, even though it was probably just some drunken bum. Brynn has nothing to do with any of this dragon business, and that’s the way he’ll keep it. Will he ever tell Brynn who he really is? He hasn’t told anyone else in the office, so why would she be special? Looking into her glossy green eyes, he knows she is special. There’s a rumbling feeling deep in his gut that he’s desperate to keep at bay, but it’s a powerful force.

Brynn is his mate. There’s no doubt about it. He can’t stop thinking about her, and when he sees her he feels things that he hasn’t felt in years, not since Rachel. There have been plenty of hookups and flings, which left him, satisfied at best and hollow at worst. With Brynn, there’s something different that stirs up an animalistic urge to have her. Not just in bed, but by his side all the time. When he talks to her, he feels at home. It’s as simple as that, and yet not simple at all. She has no idea who he really is and she’s his employee. She may not even be interested in him after he rushed her out of his home when they first met. She probably only thinks of him as the boss who anchored her to the sinking ship that was The Oceanside Inquirer.

“I’ll look around the place to make sure there’s no one here. I got you,” he tells her. “I’m here.”

He looks in every closet, under her bed, behind the shower curtain, and any other place someone could be in the apartment. He loves the chance to walk around her room and be in her world. Her scent drives him wild and he wants to rip her clothes off right then and there.

“There’s no one here,” Hudson confirms. Brynn sits nervously on the edge of her bed. He senses that she’s still unsettled. “Is there anything else going on?” he asks, hoping she sees him as a source of comfort.

“No, I’m fine,” she replies rather unconvincingly. There’s a moment of silence and Hudson thinks of all the things he wants to say to her, but holds back.

“I’ll stay if you want. Just until you fall asleep,” he offers.

“You’d do that? I can’t ask you to do that.”

“You didn’t. I offered.”

“What about Jaxon?”

“He’s with a sitter. She’s okay to stay as long as I need.”

“I mean, this place is kind of a mess.
